Asthma can start at any age and tends
to run in the family. Asthma is commonly
started by allergies but in babies asthma may
develop from an infection whereas in older
children it may be due to allergies or
infection.
Asthma starts from the inflammation
of the lining of the airways-from allergies or
by infection. The allergic inflammation makes
the lining sensitive and accounts for the
irritability of the airways to non-specific
triggers. Chemicals are released into the
airways as part of the inflammation process
stimulating nerves and muscles. This causes a
narrowing of the airways and coughing.
